Emergency access

Under Settings, Security, you can split a recovery key into shares and choose how many it takes to open the vault, such as any three of five. Each person gets a printable sheet with a QR code. Fewer than the required number learn nothing.

The waiting period is advice

Nothing enforces a wait. With no server involved, trustees who hold enough shares can open the vault at once. The restore screen shows the wait you asked for, and can leave a notice in a shared location so that your devices warn you and you can rekey. Choose people you would trust with the vault today.

A trustee holding an old copy of the file can read that old copy even after you rekey.
